Beauty Spot: M.A.C unveils Heirloom Mix
Nadine Kam photos
M.A.C cosmetics introduced its Holiday “Heirloom Mix” collection during an event that took place at Ala Moana Center’s Centerstage Dec. 5 and 6.
M.A.C Cosmetics presented a dazzling mix of performance and makeup artistry during an event that took place Dec. 5 and 6 at Ala Moana Center.
The M.A.C Pro Ala Moana team was there with visiting Director of Makeup Artistry Gregory Arlt, who shared some of his tips for holiday radiance.
The Heirloom Mix Collection is all about sophisticated hues for face, eyes, nails and lips, with a touch of sparkle and glitter. And while Arlt said, “I love glitter,” he added, “It doesn’t have to be extreme to be effective.”

A touch of sparkling lip gloss over dramatic red lipstick is a perfect holiday look that can be worn by anyone, and he called a sensual red lipstick “the little black dress of makeup. It looks beautiful and men love it.”
Even so, as he travels from coast to coast, he finds many women shy away from such a bold statement.
“If you’re afraid of red, start with something lighter, like a stain or sheer red lipgloss.”
Most of all, he said, don’t be afraid to try new looks and trends as they emerge. “Just remember it’s makeup; it comes off.”

Lighten up for summer
iPhone link for video
When summer comes, I always think of lightening up on makeup, though it's been so hot since last fall, that I've been trying to go lighter all along. Makeup just seems to melt away so I almost figure, why bother? It's gotten to the point where I'm not using any foundation at all, just tinted moisturizer.
In the June 9 paper is my story about a summer make-under on an older woman, because young women don't need any help looking radiant!
Here are some of my favorite things for the greatest of ease, without looking like I've completely given up:
1. Osmotics Age Prevention Protection Extreme SPF 40 UVA/UVB moisturizer.
2. BeneFit mango-inspired Cha Cha Tint lip and cheek stain ($29). Just don't let it sit too long before rubbing it in because it really stains.
3. BeneFit The Porefessional pro balm for minimizing pores ($28).
4. C.O. Bigelow "Ginger Mint" Mentha Lip Tint with ginger and mint oils for flavor and touch of gold shimmer, $7.50 at Bath and Body Works.
5. Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Gel Cream Liner: The economy being what it is, I've been experimenting with more drugstore brands. Some things you can't get away with spending less. I find with eyeshadows you get better texture and more pigment with pricier brands, and in lipsticks you get better texture and more moisturizing formulas at the higher end, but sometimes you can get away with spending less, like on these eyeliner trios in stackable pots are about $10.95. You can shop by eye color: Brown, hazel, blue or green. I use the trio for brown eyes (black, brown and violet), pictured, but I think the green eye combination of green, blue and black would also work on those with brown eyes and dark hair.

Holiday at Trump, Part II
Nadine Kam photos
Haley Pancipanci, whose mother is stylist Crystal Pancipanci, was the youngest guest at a Sephora event and spa open house at the Spa at Trump Dec. 7. Both mother and daughter signed up for fresh manicures.
Sephora and the Spa at Trump teamed up for a holiday beauty event at the Trump International Hotel Waikiki Dec. 7, with the offer of makeup touchups, nail polish changes, mini facials and quick shoulder massages.
I could probably use a masseuse working at my desk eight hours a day due to the occupational hazard of persistent typing fatique. I'm so used to my shoulders and that arm muscle near the elbow aching that I think that's all that's wrong, but principal massage therapist Christiane Coty's strong hands told me otherwise. The pains go all the way down my spine, though the shoulder pains usually distract from them. Good to know.
In the manicure room, I was admiring the chocolate brown color stylist Crystal Pancipanci was getting, but guests were able to sign up for the mini services in advance, and all were booked.
In the makeup room, Stila makeup artist Starr Gentry was sharing the brand's latest holiday products, including its fantastic Color Wheel eyeshadow palette with a pro artist lookbook showing the many looks that can be achieved with the $38 37-color palette. It includes a trio of rosy colors that can do double-duty on cheeks.
Many of us were drawn to tubes of glitter eye liner, available in multiple colors, which Sephora staffers used to apply sparkling cat eyes, perfect for the party season ahead!
Stila makeup artist Starr Gentry was helping Sephora with makeup application. She's sharing some of Stila's new holiday products with Helena Barahal, whose daughter Olivia is in the background.
Starr was showing Stila's big (at about 8-by-8 inches) new holiday Color Wheel Eyeshadow Palette. Thirty-six wet/dry colors for $38. With rosy colors that can also double as cheek color, it may be the only palette you'll need for a long time. It comes with a booklet, left, of eye looks created by Stila's makeup artists, using every color.
Faye Ross, of Stella Honolulu, showed me her four-ways earrings. You can see how the entire earring at upper left, breaks down into the three other pieces shown. It's one way to get four looks out of one approximately $58 pair of earrings. To date, the Spa at Trump is the only place that carries them, and she said they'll be available in Monterey, Calif., before they hit the mainstream in Hawaii. The piece at the far right is an add-on accessory.
