Hawaii companies in the SI swim

No doubt some are ogling their annual Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.

The magazine is a boon to many an island swimwear and accessories company, helping to put many small businesses like Hula-la! and Marylea Conrad's Ki-ele on the international map through its combination of print, website and coffee table book.

You can read my story on Maui Girl, a company who had one bikini selected to being handpainted onto model Shannon Click by bodypaint artist Joanne Gair this year. Maui Girl's owner Debbie Wilson, believes hers is the first from Hawaii selected for the honor.

Maui Girl has been in the issue four years in a row, but the Hawaii's granddaddy of SI is Letarte, also from Maui, which has made the issue 11 years in a row. This year, Letarte has six swimsuits in the issue, and 15 more online.

You can read about what it took Wilson to get into the magazine in my article in today's paper.

Congratulations all!
